Thursday, July 10, 2014 - Necker Island



I have had some time to reflect on my trip to Necker. It was a journey that will have a lasting impact on me forever. I packed my bags with tears and sadness as I left my 4-month-old daughter for 6 days with feelings of regret and guilt.  The flight was long: 21 hours with a 6-hour layover in San Juan. It was a milk run for sure, but the only option outside of chartering a private plane. In retrospect it would have been worth it.  


Arrived and tired, I met the 27 other travelers that would be my comrades for the following days. They were from various walks of life and a plethora of unique entrepreneurs. The allure of spending time with Richard was on all of our minds with vivid images of what he would be like and what advice he would offer. 


The island was filled with rare animals, lush greenery, lavish accommodations, spectacular views of the ocean, a spa, tennis courts, water sports, staff to help with whatever request you made, divine meals, and Caribbean style weather. Thirsty? One could pour their own drink at one of the 5 or 6 bars around the island if staff members were elsewhere. 


Amongst this idyllic setting so many cherished moments were had. A selfie with Richard, an 18th century-like table to seat 30 for dinner, jumping off a 40 foot cliff, extravagant meals, a sailing race around the island, one-on-one time with Richard, and small group settings where Richard shared some of his stories and words of wisdom to budding entrepreneurs and seasoned veterans to business. One thing is for certain - the experience was magical and whimsical. The picturesque setting is engrained in my memory forever.


I stayed an extra night and had the whole island to myself along with a gem of a girl from Australia. We were joined by two of Richard’s dear friends for our last supper who had just arrived on the island for their week stay. I fostered what I believe to be a new friendship with the girls at that dinner table as we reveled in our experience and Richard's gracious nature. 


A journey left with no regret. I returned home to find my daughter sleeping in her bassinet. She awoke in the morning as if no time has passed and greeted me with a smile.
